Arabesque Balance



Please follow the safety requirements below before trying any of the challenges:
  1. Parent or guardian supervision is required
  2. Only complete challenges that you are comfortable with.
  3. Make sure you have a safe, open space around you so you don’t trip over anything
  4. Make sure you use the equipment outlined in each challenge safely and check that the equipment works properly before you use it
  5. Only use equipment that you are comfortable with.
  6. Remember, there are equipment modifications for each challenge!
  7. Follow the instructions in each video to ensure you are safely completing the challenges before attempting them on your own
  8. Ensure you are wearing proper footwear, stay hydrated, and most importantly have fun!

What Are We Doing?: How long can you hold the Arabesque balance pose?

Where Should We Do It?: Driveway, sidewalk, hard floor- open space free from trip or slip hazards

What Do We Need?: Stopwatch or a timer app on your phone

How Should We Set Up?: Clear the space around you of all tripping or slipping hazards.

 

How Do We Do It?

1) Starting position: Stand straight, arms can be in a position of the athlete's choosing, back leg should be lifted at a minimum of 45 degrees, point your back toes.

2) Start the timer!

4) Hold the position for as long as you can.

5) Try the challenge two times and submit your best time.

Scoring: submit the length of time that you held your Arabesque position for

What Are We Doing? Seeing how many Chaine Turns we can make in a straight linee

Where Should We Do It? Driveway, Sidewalk, long hall

What Do We Need? Straight line on the ground or floor- chalk, tape or use floor boards

How Should We Set Up? Mark or straight line on the ground

How Do We Do It?

1) From the start of your straight line get into position: high releve- tip toes, knees are straight, arms are up. Remember to sport your head to avoid getting dizzy. 

2) Preform as many Chaine Turns as you can without stepping off of your straight line

Scoring: Let us know how many turns you were able to preform in a row while staying on your straight line


Ball Toss

What Are We Doing? How many ball tosses can you preform in 1 minute?

Where Should We Do It? Driveway, sidewalk, backyard, or indoor space free of trip or slip hazards (with permission)

What Do We Need? A ball- any medium to large ball will do, stopwatch or phone to use as a timer

How Should We Set Up? Hold your ball in front of you and have your stopwatch ready

How Do We Do It?

1) Set the timer to 60 seconds

2) With your feet together and arms extended in front of your body, toss the ball up above your head height and catch it using both hands. 

3) Count how many ball tosses you complete in the 60 seconds

Scoring: Let us know how many tosses you completed during the 60 seconds


Healthy Athletes Rhythmic Gymnastics Challenge

Special Olympics Ontario is building a network of healthcare providers (dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists and others) across Ontario who are open to seeing people with intellectual disabilities. Fitness Related Challenge: Do these excercises as your event warm-up: 10 toe touches, 10 arm stretches and 10 squats. Submit a photo of you doing a squat!
